What You Need:

• Mac Computer
• Micro-USB cable
• Apple TV 2G Running 4.1 Firmware (not 4.2.1)
• Pwnage Tool 4.1 (31.1MB)
• AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89 (242MB)
• Latest iTunes 10.1.1

Follow these steps to jailbreak your Apple TV 2G:

Step 1: Download Pwnage Tool 4.1

Step 2: Download AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89

Step 3: Run Mac's Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes.

Step 4: Disconnect your Apple TV 2G from your TV and connect Apple TV to your Mac with a Micro-USB cable.
              - If iTunes opens after connecting Apple TV to Mac, just close iTunes

 Step 5: Launch PwnageTool 4.1

Step 6: Click 'OK' after reading disclaimer

Step 7: Click on 'iPad, AppleTV 2G' image

Step 8: Click the right arrow or double-click selected iPad / Apple TV image

Step 9: PwnageTool should automatically detect .IPSW files. 
              - If it doesn't find the Apple TV IPSW, browse your computer for file

Step 10: Select the 'AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89 (AppleTV 2G)' file, then click the blue right arrow OR double-click the selected AppleTV IPSW

Step 11: Select 'Yes' to continue custom firmware creation.

Step 12:  PwnageTool will now create the new custom IPSW firmware. This process takes a couple of minutes.

Step 13: Type in your password. Your 'Name' should already be filled. Select 'OK'

Step 14: If your Apple TV 2G is NOT connected to your Mac, you will now be notified to do so.


Step 15: You will now be prompted to enter the DFU mode on your Apple TV. Follow the steps given.


Step 16: You will now have to restore your Apple TV 2G to this new custom firmware 4.1 file you just created. 
Open iTunes, select your Apple TV under devices on the left.

If an iTunes prompt pops up asking you to upgrade your Apple TV 2G to the newest 4.2.1 firmware, DO NOT INSTALL NEW FIRMWARE, just select 'Cancel' or 'Not Now'

Step 17: Hold the 'Alt/Option' key and click 'Restore'. From the popup window, browse to the Folder where you saved custom iOS 4.1 and select your custom Apple TV 2G .ipsw file that you just created and click the 'Open' button. 
(Make sure you’re selecting custom firmware, NOT THE ORIGINAL one you downloaded)

Step 18: Now sit back and wait as iTunes installs the new custom firmware on your Apple TV 2G. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.1 on your Apple TV 2G. After the installation is done, your Apple TV 2G will restart automatically and you should now have a jailbroken Apple TV with full root access, running on iOS 4.1.
